Did you know that the paper mulberry tree was significant in papermaking?
You can make paper all by yourself. Hanji means the traditional handmade paper from Korea.
The Wonju Hanji Festival celebrates the beauty and artistry of Hanji mulberry paper,
one of Korea's most-cherished traditional arts and crafts.

The festival offers varied programs to learn about the traditional paper,
a Hanji fashion show, a Hanji art exhibition and a Hanji-making class to introduce the history
and various uses of the traditional mulberry paper.

Visitors can also buy or make their own Hanji and other handicrafts, such as lamp shades,
fans, dolls, flowers and much, much more.
Wonju flourishes with Hanji.
The tradition was revived in 1990 as a Wonju citizen saw the importance of preserving
The traditional Hanji production.

The festival officially began in 1999 with the effort and education of Wonju and developed
The Hanju Institute is as well.
Among the development, the Wonju Hanji theme park was established in September 2010.
Since 2011, under the consignment of the Hanji developing institute, the theme park has been
the principal place for the hanji related art and culture education, cultural exchange,
and 'Wonju Hanji Festival.'

This has allowed citizen-friendly hanji to grow as a cultural art. Moreover, in 2019,
Hanji master Jang Eung Yeol was designated as the Gandwondo's 32nd Intangible Cultural Asset.
The Wonju Hanji Festival is held with the theme of hanji (Korean traditional paper),
a great cultural heritage that embodies the wisdom and aesthetic of the Korean people.

With the exhibition of beautiful works made with Hanji, various experiential programs and
Autumn night performances are held during the festival.
Wonju, a city that presents harmonious urban landscapes where tradition and modernity coexist,
It invites people around the world to the most iconic "Korean" cultural festival and the world of hanji.


Special events include the Hanji Fashion Show and there are also exhibitions including,
street of light grassroots Korean paper lantern exhibition, special exhibition, paper forest exhibition,
hanji history exhibition, and exhibition of the winning works of the Korean Hanji Art Competition.


Hands-on and experimental programs included the Five-color h
anji making, making daily necessities with hanji, traditional hanji craft experience, dakjongi making, etc.
The performances lineup are Opening performances, ensemble and orchestral concerts, fringe festival, etc.
